The Potentials of joint play in child therapy

Children, if they are securely attached, grow into a healthy development of play. Through “eye dance” (Sue Jennings), playing with the body and the grasping of the surroundings  through projection and role play, they create closeness and relief for themselves. They permeate what they have experienced, they process and understand what they have encountered, and in doing so they are held in a creative space.

Children who have experienced neglect, powerlessness, separation, loss, violence … often show a fragile development of play. They have not sufficiently experienced the safe environment in which free play and exploration are possible.

Creating a shared space for play is a priority in therapy with young children. Only in this space can we give troubled children access to healing and creative powers.

In this workshop, we will attend to the play of 3-9 year old children based on our personal play developments and explore drama therapy approaches for their applicability to this age group.
